PROFESSOR NICOLA MAFFULLI

Professor Nicola Maffulli is widely recognised as one of the world's most eminent consultant orthopaedic and sports injury surgeons.  He is responsible for pioneering revolutionary new procedures and techniques in foot and ankle surgery and indeed he is responsible for fixing some of the UK's top sportsmen and women such as Premiership football players as well as Track and field Athletes and international rugby players.  In addition to this, he has also been asked by Nike to lend his knowledge and expertise to help develop the worlds first and most orthopaedic and medically correct training/running shoe.

Born in Naples, Nicola was educated and went to medical school in Italy and then went to university in the UK where he gained his PhD: Doctor of Philosophy, University of London, 1992, his MS: Master of Surgery, University of London, 1994 and his MD: Doctor of Medicine, University of Aberdeen, 1998. Nicola also holds the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Orthopaedics. Indeed, he is proud to have been the first non-British European to have passed the relevant exam. He was awarded the Diploma in Sports Medicine by both the Society of Apothecaries, London, England in 1990, and the Scottish Royal Colleges Joint Board in Sports Medicine, Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1991.

Nicola has lectured on his pioneering methods throughout Europe and the USA and he has even been made an honorary fellow of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, honours reserved for very few!

Apart from being one of the world's top surgeons and lecturers in this field, Nicola is also a published writer.  In this respect he has written, been editor of or has contributed to well over 250 published works.  In addition, he has published six books on Orthopaedic Surgery and in Sports Medicine. The latest, on tendon injuries, has just reached the bookshops. Due to these extra curricular activities and the heavy clinical workload that has characterised his remarkable career thus far, the Prof has developed subspecialty interests and focuses in the following areas: Foot and ankle surgery, Sports trauma, Deformity correction and Complex trauma.

When he is not travelling across the globe lending his skills and expertise lecturing (to students and professional peers alike), writing, saving the careers of the worlds top sportsmen and women or operating on the normal individual both privately and the NHS, Nicola enjoys keeping fit and he is an experienced athlete.  He has a love of martial arts and is a black belt in judo. One of his real passions was horse riding, however he was forced to stop this after a bad fall that resulted in an operation.  In fact, Nicola openly admits "..given my past experience as a high level athlete, there is hardly one operation that I offer my patients that I have not had myself!."
